European Removals Cost Comparison: France, Spain, Germany and Italy

The cost of a European removal from West Yorkshire varies considerably depending on which country you are moving to, how much you are shipping, and what access is like at both ends. DSD Removals & Storage is a family-run Bradford business that has been handling European moves for over 20 years. This guide breaks down what actually changes the price by route so you can compare before asking for a quote.

What Drives the Price on a European Removal

Before comparing countries, it helps to understand the four factors that move the cost up or down on any international job.

Distance and driving hours. A Bradford-to-Paris run is roughly 550 miles door to door. Bradford to Barcelona is closer to 1,200 miles. Longer routes mean more fuel, more driver hours, and often a second driver under EU tachograph rules. Those costs feed directly into the quote.

Volume and vehicle type. A one-bedroom flat might fill a third of a 7.5-tonne vehicle. A four-bedroom house can require a full 18-tonne curtainsider or a groupage container slot on a 40-foot trailer. The vehicle type and the fraction of it your load fills are the two biggest line items on any European quote.

Access at origin and destination. Narrow village roads in rural France, height-restricted parking in a German city centre, or a fifth-floor Barcelona apartment with no lift all add time and sometimes specialist equipment. Time is cost.

Customs and paperwork. Since January 2021, moves to all EU countries require export inventory documentation, proof of residence, and customs declarations at the border. DSD uses a specialist customs broker for this, which removes the risk of delays at Dover or Calais but does add a handling fee to the quote.

European Removals Cost Comparison by Country

The table below gives indicative cost bands for a standard three-bedroom house move from Bradford. These are guide ranges only. Every job is priced individually; the only way to get an accurate figure is to book a free survey with DSD.

DestinationApproximate distance from BradfordRelative cost band (3-bed house)Key cost variables
France (Paris / Normandy)550-700 milesLower rangeShort route, high port volume, groupage often available
Spain (Madrid / Barcelona)1,100-1,300 milesHigher rangeLong haul, Iberian Peninsula routing, mountain access
Germany (Berlin / Munich)750-1,000 milesMid rangeCentral Europe routing, customs broker required
Italy (Milan / Rome)950-1,400 milesMid to higher rangeAlpine crossings, long peninsula distances for southern Italy
Switzerland850-950 milesMid to higher rangeNon-EU customs, stricter import controls, VAT deposit sometimes required

These are relative cost indicators only, not DSD’s tariff. Every European removal is priced individually after a free home survey. Request a written quote for an accurate figure.

France: the Most Common European Route from Yorkshire

France is the highest-volume European destination for DSD customers. The Dover-Calais crossing is the shortest sea leg, groupage (shared container) loads run regularly, and the road network from Calais to most French regions is straightforward. That combination keeps costs at the lower end of the European range for a given volume. See our full removals to France service page for route-specific detail.

Where costs increase on French moves: rural Normandy and Brittany properties often have long private driveways or cobbled village access that rules out the largest vehicles. Paris arrondissements with resident-only parking zones can require a permit and a shuttle vehicle from a holding point. Confirm access details at both ends when requesting a quote.

Spain: Longest Haul from Bradford

Spain is the longest standard route DSD covers from Bradford. Barcelona is roughly 1,250 miles and Madrid around 1,350. That distance, combined with mountain passes on the Pyrenean crossing and a longer sea option via Santander or Bilbao for Atlantic Spain, means Spanish moves sit at the higher end of the cost range.

Groupage to Spain runs on a longer cycle than France, so if you are flexible on delivery date you can reduce cost by joining a shared load. Full-load moves for larger properties get priority routing and a confirmed delivery window. DSD’s customs broker handles all HMRC export documentation and Spanish customs clearance. See our removals to Spain page for a full breakdown of the route and packing options.

Germany: Central Europe Routing via the Channel Tunnel

Germany is mid-range for distance and typically mid-range for cost. Berlin is around 900 miles from Bradford; Munich is similar at 950. Road routing via the Channel Tunnel and through Belgium or the Netherlands keeps driving hours manageable, and the German motorway network means access is rarely an issue for urban deliveries.

City-centre deliveries in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg or Frankfurt can require low-emission zone permits (Umweltzone) for the removal vehicle. DSD arranges these in advance, but they add a small administrative cost. Rural Bavarian properties with tight farm-track access carry the same surcharges as equivalent access issues in France. Full route detail is on our removals to Germany page.

Italy: Distance Multiplied by the Peninsula

Northern Italy, Milan, Turin, Verona, is comparable to southern Germany in driving time. Rome adds another 350 miles down the peninsula, and Naples or Sicily extends that further still. Italian moves are priced on destination zone: north, centre or south, with southern surcharges reflecting the additional driving.

Alpine crossings (Mont Blanc or Brenner Pass) can close in heavy snow, so winter moves to northern Italy carry a contingency buffer. DSD plans routes with weather margins built in for November-to-March bookings. For zone pricing and route options, see our removals to Italy page.

Storage Before, During or After a European Move

Not all European moves go door to door on the same date. If your UK property completes before your overseas address is ready, or if you are renovating on arrival, containerised storage at DSD’s Bradford depot at Sher House, 46 Houghton Place bridges the gap. Our European removals and overseas removals pages cover the full range of routes and storage combinations available. The depot runs 24-hour CCTV and your belongings stay in a named container rather than a general warehouse.

Storage costs are calculated per container per week. The number of containers depends on volume, a one-bedroom flat typically fills one; a four-bedroom house may need three. DSD will confirm the container count as part of the free survey.

Packing: Full Pack, Part Pack, or DIY

Packing adds cost but reduces risk. Goods-in-transit insurance for European moves generally pays out at a lower rate on items packed by the owner compared to items packed by the crew. For fragile items, art, or electronics, having DSD’s team pack those specific rooms can reduce the exposure at relatively low additional cost.

For a three-bedroom house, a full-pack service from DSD typically runs over a dedicated pack day before the loading day. Part-pack, where the crew handles fragile and awkward items and the customer handles books, linen, and non-fragile boxes, is a common middle option that keeps packing costs down without transferring all the fragile-handling risk to the customer.

Common Mistakes That Push European Removal Costs Up

  • Booking the lowest-priced visible online quote without confirming whether customs documentation is included, it often is not
  • Underestimating volume: a standard three-bedroom house almost always exceeds the “two-man van” category; getting bumped to a larger vehicle after survey adds cost late in the process
  • Requesting a fixed delivery date for a groupage (shared load) move: groupage runs on a cycle, and a hard date forces a full-load booking at a higher rate
  • Ignoring access issues at the destination: a fifth-floor walk-up in Rome or a cobbled lane in rural France can double the unload time
  • Leaving pets and plants to the last minute: both have specific import rules for EU countries that require advance documentation; DSD can advise but cannot arrange veterinary or phytosanitary certificates

Frequently Asked Questions

For a standard move to France or Germany, six to eight weeks is a workable lead time. Spain and Italy benefit from eight to twelve weeks, especially in peak summer months (June to August) when European routes fill quickly. DSD can accommodate shorter notice for smaller volumes on groupage runs, but full-load slots in peak season book out early. Request a survey date as soon as you have a provisional completion or departure date.

No. The relative cost bands in the table are indicators only, not DSD’s tariff. Your actual quote depends on your precise volume (measured during a free home survey), access at both addresses, packing requirements, whether you need storage, and your move dates. DSD provides a written, no-obligation quote after survey.

DSD works with a specialist customs broker who prepares the export inventory, HMRC export declaration, and the EU-side import documentation for the destination country. You will need to provide proof of change of residence (utility bills, lease, employment contract or property purchase confirmation). The broker handles submission and border clearance. Switzerland is non-EU and has additional import controls, including a VAT deposit for high-value goods in some cases — DSD confirms the specifics at survey stage.

Yes. For smaller volumes, DSD can book a groupage slot on a shared European load, which means your items travel in a dedicated part of a container alongside other customers’ consignments on the same route. Groupage is priced by cubic metre and runs on a fixed weekly or fortnightly cycle per destination country. Delivery windows are longer than a full-load move, typically one to three weeks from collection, but the cost per item is considerably lower.

    GI Group

GI Group UK provides recruitment, staffing and workforce management services to local and national clients of all sizes. This places an average of 12,000 temporary and permanent staff into work nationwide each week, across all market sectors.

Our team relocated their office to Wakefield. We disposed of waste items using professional, authorised methods via environment agency.

Nikki Patterson, the office manager in Wakefield, said she was ‘delighted’ with the service we provided.

    Sharp Agency Ltd

‘Twas the last Saturday before Christmas and our team were tasked with moving office furniture and boxes. Our professional office removals service included the supply of removals boxes and crates. We were also contracted to dismantle and assemble large furniture when required.

Despite the large size of this move, we put all of our energy into completing it in record time, due to the proximity of the upcoming Christmas holiday. We completed the move with over 10 staff and four vehicles. Our work was completed by 3 pm and our customer was over the moon with the service we provided.

    Calderdale Credit Union

We were contracted to complete the large removal of several sites in Halifax. Working closely with members of staff, we were able to meet all requirements and deadlines.

We moved 6,000 cubic feet of furniture and boxes. It was made difficult by the fact that the office was a Victorian type property, so the access was difficult. There were also no lifts, so our crew had to travel up and down 36 steps.

Despite the difficulties, our team showed their determined attitude by working hard to suit the customer’s needs. They approached the task with a positive mindset to overcome the challenges, whilst complying with all health and safety procedures.

    Peace Hall

This was our first businesses relocation of the year. We had been recommended by Calderdale Credit Union’s board of directors, as they were very impressed with the service that we provided when we worked with them. It only took our team two days to move thousands of toy car boxes, using safe procedures.

All members of staff showed a positive attitude, and our client was thrilled to have used DSD Office Removals for their business relocation.
